Hand work

I haven't posted in awhile. Been busy during the holidays and under the weather. I have just been doing some hand work lately, not getting into any big jobs. This logcabin star has been a long project. I quilted it a few months ago and just now finishing the binding, but now it is finished except for washing it. It will go in the next load to wash today. That is part of the quilt for me is the feel and crinkle look after washing.

This is a wool wallhanging I did for Halloween but didn't get the hand stitching around it. I took a class at camp this year making Christmas Ornaments from wool and I love working with it. I didn't have the right color of embroidery thread for it and had to wait till I went to Ashland to get it, which is about an hour drive. We have nothing in our town that sells embroidery thread, yarn, etc. I just noticed I still have to make the cats eyes. Don't know if I can find small buttons or will I just do a french knot with white thread.

I didn't get to go to last Quilt Guild Meeting cause I had a Dr. appointment that morning. Martha brought me a pair of the mittens they did at our Christmas party. Thanks to Sandy and Virginia for preparing these for the members. I enjoy sitting and doing the buttonhole stitch around these things.

Pincushions

You can see what I been doing lately. I have been making some pincushions and quilting. This summer when our homemaker group visited Neff's Country Loft I saw some Pincushions made from wool. Of course, it has been in the back of my mind to make some and I finally got around to starting them on Sunday. I have worked on them for a few days now and really enjoy working with wool. These are made from wool jackets bought from Goodwill stores. It is time consuming but I enjoy doing it. First, cut the jackets in pieces. I take them apart at the seams and wash them in very hot water and dry at very hot temperature. Next step is the applique and embroidery stitching. Which one is your favortie? Red or Cream?

And today I quilted a quilt for Barbara. I just love quilting these quilts and seeing ways each person puts them together. I've been told this lady always designs her own, so I don't know the name of this one.

Monica Young will be one of the dozens of people who help guide a massive Ronald McDonald balloon through the streets of New York City during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade today.
Young, who was born and raised in Louisa and now works as an EMT for Boyd County EMS, says the task fits perfectly with her “Dream big and fly high” philosophy. Her role as a balloon escort actually began with a spontaneous decision to travel to New York City to experience New Year’s in Times Square.
“I had always wanted to experience the ball drop. I got off work at 8 a.m. on New Year’s Eve and was debating a spontaneous journey,” she recalled, explaining she didn’t want to look back at the opportunity with regret in 10 years. “I only had $25 to my name when I made the decision.”
A friend donated $100 for the trip and Young said she was thrilled to discover a co-worker had deposited her paycheck for her before she even arrived in the Big Apple. Friends in the city had invited her to visit and provided a place to stay, she said, explaining she was guided toward a parking spot in New Jersey and traveled into the city on the subway, emerging on 42nd Street with a view of the illuminated New Year’s ball.
While there, Young attended an open house hosted by a longtime balloon team handler, and asked what qualifications would be required to help handle a balloon in the famous parade. She was advised to apply and soon received a training DVD.
“Right now I’m in Queens and heading into Manhattan,” she said, explaining she wasn’t able to attend any of the preliminary events featuring the parade’s balloons and will be making her debut as a handler during the big event.
Her assignment is to help guide the clown made famous by McDonald’s advertising, and she will be wearing a costume with several layers of insulative clothing beneath as part of the show. Each rope ends with “the bone,” she said, explaining a “dog bone-shaped” handle is attached to the end of each security strand.
Each balloon requires 75 to 125 handlers in addition to two or three vehicles to make it through the 2.5 mile parade route, Young said. While the job is relatively straight-forward, Young said handlers must be aware of their environment.
“Weather, of course, is the main thing,” she said, noting wind is the enemy of every balloon in the parade.
“For no reason whatsoever do we stop at intersections due to the crosswinds,” she said, noting the city’s intersections tend to be a bit like valleys in the mountains, channeling strong air currents between each.
The experience will be one of many Young is pleased to have enjoyed.
“I am an adventure seeker,” she said. “I love to experience life. Even if I face adversity I say ‘Truck on.’ Doing this, I hope to make more friends and connections that could lead to something else. I mean, I came to New York to watch the ball drop and now I’m going to be in the parade. Who knows what might come from this?”

Took my daughter to the airport today. She is in NYC tonight preparing for the Macy's Day Parade. Well tonight and tomorrow she will be spending with some friends. Thanksgiving she will be in parade. Watch for her. She will be a balloon handler for Ronald McDonald.

Quilter's Garden

Just finished putting the binding on Quilter's Garden for Pat. Quilted it this morning, put binding on this afternoon. This is one I would like to make. Of course, I want to make a lot of the ones I see. This one has muslin on the back and it already feels so soft. I just love muslin. My grandmother always used it and I would ask her why she didn't get the bleached. Now I like the unbleached myself. Funny how a person changes their likes and dislikes as they get older.

Danny's Granddaughters (Twins) Quilts

Danny and I worked from 10:00am till 6:00 pm last night on the quilts for his granddaughters, which are twins and over a year old. They were born 3 months premature. I have posted about them before. They are so cute!!! We got these completed before we stopped. He brought a couple of his mothers house coats and we used them for tops and a pink massage blanket for the backing. I had the batting. He wanted to make them something from his mothers and fathers clothing. His father helped with the Boy Scouts for probably 30 years. He always cooked for them. Danny took one of his shirts and cut the emblem from it to make a pocket on the blanket cause we left a pocket on the other one from the house coat. I am sure the girls will be hiding things in those pockets. He made us one of the best Asian Salads you ever ate.

Non Smoking Quilt

The Quilted Treasure Quilt Guild was asked to put together a quilt to promote NON SMOKING. Each lady was assigned a block to make. Sandy and her mom put this together. They did the sashing, the tree of life, the path around the border, plus some of the blocks. I finished quilting it last night.

UK Quilt for Tammie

Finished quilting a UK quilt for Tammie. I am thinking about making one to sell tickets for a fundraiser for County Homemakers. I was pleased with the end results. I used the loop-de-loop quilt pattern. Well, really it is just a free hand quilting, no pattern. I enjoy doing this stitch but it takes longer to quilt and takes a lot more thread.

Basket Class

The Extension service had a Basket Class last Saturday. They were about 10 took the class. We had a great time maing the Shaker Tote Basket. It has a cloth handle but if you want to stain it you have to do that first before attaching the handle. I am going to stain mine. The teach was from Pikeville.

Hardwood Floor

Last couple of days been getting hardwood floor installed. I just love it! Lot of difference in it and the carpet.

Quilts n Things

Martha and I visited a quilt shop in South Point, Ohio today. I had never been there before. Martha had been there few years ago. They have lots of pretty fabric. Only thing I bought was a book, Civil War Love Letter. I am hoping to collect fabric for this quilt and learn paper piecing. I finished quilting the mystery quilt and got the binding on it. I also forgot to put a sleeve on it and now comes the hard job. Never have got a chance to take a picture of it yet but will get to it soon. We are having hardwood floors put down next two days in living room and hallway. Probably won't get much done the rest of this week.

And later this evening got the label embroideried on Melissa's Baby Quilt and quilted it. Also got the binding put on it.

No Longer a Mystery

Lawrence County Quilted Treasures Quilt Guild is making our annual Mystery Quilt. This is the third one we have done. I finished the first one, which was the Halloween Ghost, the second one was the Bug Quilt which I still need to put the border on it, and now the third one, which I just finished mitering the corners. It is good to have completed it. I kept telling Sandy, our instructor, that I knew all along that I knew what it was, but had no clue. I think she bought it. I now have a quilt on the frame and after finishing it maybe I can quilt this one. This one measures 52 X 66.

When It Rains It Pours

I don't know how much more is going to happen. First quilting machines tension is off, then computer crashes. Got up this morning and computer was trying to restart. Windows would not load. Took it to be repaired and hopefully get it back soon. I hope files can be saved. I guess it is a good way to clean computer. I had some things backed up but it had been a while since backed up my embroidery files and quilt patterns I have saved. Could not find my pictures either on the hard drive. I know the Lord is in control. All things, good or bad, happen for a reason. Didn't even think about it till it crashed. I don't have another computer with a flash drive so I can take pictures of my camera. I really miss that. Today it was raining and I looked out the window and saw 12 grown turkeys standing in the road across from our house. The road was full. Each one looked to weigh 20 lbs each.

Wool Ornaments

Just finished the last wool ornament that I started at Camp this year. I have enjoyed making these. Next I want to make a couple of wall hangings. Having problem finding yellow or orange wool jackets. Been gathering colors needed from Goodwill each time I go. I think maybe I will use a piece of orange corduroy that I have, after all it is just a wall hanging.

Felting

A few weeks ago at Camp, I took a class doing Wool Ornaments and of course, I wanted to do some more things with wool. I had a long wool coat that will be just perfect for felting. I also bought a few more at Goodwill. I have been felting all day. I have navy blue, black with a stripe, maroon, green, tan, and red. I was wanting to find an orange jacket for a pumpkin or yellow for a fadder shock. My goal is to get the colors I need for a wall hanging. I have enjoyed working with this today. On the internet it said to cut the jackets up first before washing them but I didn't. I started tearing one apart and to time consuming. I washed all but one and going to cut them and press them after washed and dried.

I also crocheted about 3 necklaces today. I got some different yarn at Big Lots and a roll at Goodwill. It is not the ladder yarn like the girls had at camp but they look alright. I like to keep numerous projects going at one time. I don't get bored that way. LOL

Backing to Small

I have always been concerned about running out of backing while quilting, especially someone elses quilt. Well, I experienced that tonight. You can see in photo that the batting was about 8 inches to small also, backing was about 2 1/2 to 3 inches but after it was finished it was only half that amount.

First I had to take pins out of the backing and the top. Then I sewed a strip all along the end of the quilt.

Next I got the iron and pressed the seam. I didn't want it to get twisted and make a wrinkle on the back of the quilt. After all that I rolled it back up and pinned the backing to the leader cloth. I didn't bother with pinning the top. I just smoothed it out and was careful when quilting it. I also laid batting under it and all this worked out just fine. It wasn't as much trouble as I had always thought it would be, just very time consuming.

Stop Smoking

Had a guild meeting yesterday. Our guild is making a wall hanging for UK to promote Stop Smoking. It will be hung in the Health Department. It will have 8 blocks representing something about stop smoking, 4 on each side with the middle block having a tree appliqued in the middle. A path around the outside with Log Cabin blocks for corner blocks.

First Day at Camp Caleb

Today was our first day at Camp Caleb. Each year our Homemakers can go to camp for three days and take classes. This year a three of my friends and I took a class making wool ornements. We completed one this evening. The teacher gave us 4 but we only had time to make one. We greatly enjoyed this class. We are blessed with some of the best teachers.

Some other friends and the extension agent took a class making baskets and one did some water color.

Some of the ladies from Boyd county were selling crocheted necklaces for fundraiser for ovarian cancer. I bought a couple of them and think I might try my hand at making some later on.

Binding Cherith's Quilt

This evening I got the binding on Cheirth's quilt. I quilted this for her when I first got my machine and frame. She never did get around to putting the binding on and decided she would bring it to me to do. It is a very soft quilt. She got Dream Cotton batting and the material feels so soft.

I quilted this one for Cherith's friend. It is a baby quilt. It had hand embroidery on the lace and put blue fabric behind it, then batting, and backing. I had never seen one done like that. I was a little nervous about getting wrinkles in the top but all went well.

Dear Jane Panel

This is the Dear Jane Panel I got when our Homemaker group went to Country Loft Quilt Shop. I had so much fun quilting this. I just played around trying to follow lines. I sure didn't do good at all, it is a mess on the back. I put muslin on the back as I usually do and you can see each mistake and they are to numerous to count. Took me a couple of weeks to put the binding on it. I have been working on others in the meantime. I am taking this one to church for a cover when I get cold from air conditioning and/or in winter.

Block Completed

Our Quilt Guild is making a quilt to encourage people to stop smoking. We will be making 8 blocks to go beside a center block with an appliqued tree in the center. It will also have a path around it for the border. Each was assigned a block to do. Martha came up today and we made our blocks. I would rather not say how long it took us to do these simple blocks. The directions were not very clear, now figure. I made one as a practice block before cutting the material I had that matches the other blocks in the quilt. Which of these blocks are your favorite, the top or bottom one? I forgot to take a picture of Martha's block before she went home.

Bed Scarf

Dennis Green Valley Daycation

Here is some pictures of Dennis Green Valley Daycation (some of the girls called it Daycation instead of Vacation) to Blennerhassett Island. We left Extension office at 6:00am. First stop around 10:00am, was at Neff's Country Loft which is a country craft and quilt store. We saw all kinds of primitive crafts and the quilt shop had a huge selection of quilt supplies and beautiful material.

Next we had lunch at Hardee's before going for a 30 minute fiery ride over to the island.

Next we enjoyed a covered wagon ride around the estate before touring the Blennerhassett Mansion.

We then boarded the boat going back across the Ohio River. The sternwheeler departed from Civitan Park in Belpre, Ohio due to the riverfront development in Parkersburg, WV.

Next stop was to the Museum. Most interesting thing for me at the museum was a Double Wedding Ring quilt. It was different because the middle of the ring was square and another thing was fasinating the quilting wasn't 1/8 inch apart and some of it even closer. We even went back to the Country Loft a second time before leaving town.

Some of the girls had bought flowers from a greenhouse next door to the Country Loft giving us good excuss to go back. I got a package of Quilt Patis, the green fabric and ordered a stileto first time. Next time I got a cheater panel, and two other pieces of fabric. Also, I just couldn't leave without two patterns.

We stopped in Mineral Wells and ate at Cracker Barrel before coming home. We arrived back at Extension office around 11:00pm. All had a great time! Thanks to Debbie for planning this trip for us.

Accomplishment's Today

I am sure this top is familiar to some of you. I started making these squares September 2008, almost a year later the last border is on it and ready to quilt. I finished the top today and hope to get it on the frame to quilt maybe next week. I also got the binding sewn on the lap throw I finished quilting yesterday and the Star Log Cabin. They are both ready for hand sewing the binding to the back. I would like to get some of these things completed. I have lots of others I am thinking about starting.

Some Old Projects Near Finishing

I finished this Redwork around the first of July but never got around to taking a picture for blog. I made a wall hanging April 2005 with one of these in the center of it and liked it so well I thought I would make a small wall hanging from one. I worked on it a little while demonstrating redwork for Farm and Field Day. I worked a few days for Railroad Union answering phone and I was able to finish this in a few days.

I finally finished this Star Log Cabin. We made this with the quilt guild about 4 years ago. I have had this on the frame for couple of months or longer. I would quilt a row a day until it is finally quilted. I already have the binding made and need to get it sewed on. It turned out to be 104" long, which is way to long.

This is the preprinted lap throw I made a few weeks ago. I put it in the frame this evening and finished it in a few hours. Now I need to make the binding for it and sew it on so I can sit and hand sew it to the back.

Today I finished the last border on this lapsize quilt. The middle panel is a preprinted one. I just added some borders to it. This will probably be used in the car once it is quilted and binding on it.

Small Truck

I have been wanting Lionel to get a small truck for some time now. We finally got one. I just wanted one that I could drive with ease. We got a 2003Toyota Tacoma. I just love it, and think Lionel does also! Of course we can't haul anything that is to long but I have seen so many times I wanted to haul something and didn't want to try to squeaze it into the trunk of the car. I wanted a black truck and Lionel wanted one with a seat for grandkids, so we both got mostly what we wanted.He would rather have Ford, Cheverolet or GMC, American made. Toyota is made in US now but I am sure American made have some foreign made parts. I don't know of much that is 100%. As I was taking this picture a Blazer came behind him and he had to pull out really fast. He squalled the tires. Just not use to a V6. LOL Well his work truck is but it will take a little time for me to get use to some power. LOL

Two Lapsize for Barb

Haven't been keeping up with blogging lately. I have been working on the binding for the double wedding ring. It takes a while to get the binding done on them. Just finished quilting two lapsize for Barb Cassidy. Both of them are alike except for the backings.

I did forget that I made a Drunkard's Path block to see how it would look with the yellow. I am not sure I like it. I think I will try a white background before making anymore. What is some of your opinions?

Ann's Lapsize

Well, I did it. I quilted Ann's Lapsize tonight. I don't know the name of either of her quilts. I only know that this one is a sampler. They are so soft. She had already washed her backing and they feel so good.

Two More Completed

It's been a while since my last blog. I don't seem to get as much done any more. I always like to have a picture when I blog. I do see that I missed blogging about our Annual Homemakers Meeting on Tuesday. I finished the Double Wedding Ring for Alma the first of the week except trimming around it. Now comes the hard job, the binding. It's really not that hard but takes some time to complete. The second quilt is a twin size for Ann. It was fairly easy and I completed it today. I now have a lapsize of her's to put on the frame but don't know if I will get to that tonight or not. Been out mowing grass after supper and a nap.

Monday's Meetings

Monday I had two meetings to attend, Lawrence County Quilted Treasures Quilt Guild in AM and Dennis Green Valley Homemakers last meeting till September. We were privileged to have a speaker at our Quilt Guild Meeting, which was Michelle Hill, owner of WV Quilts in Barboursville, WV. Michelle showed us her technique of chenille.

Dennis Green Valley Homemakers, which I am a member, had their last meeting before September. We don't have meetings in the summer months cause everyone is to busy with other things, vacation, cutting grass, gardening, etc. We went to Kentucky Roots, which is aproximately 12 miles from Louisa. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Kitty and I took some pictures while there.

I Got Pockets!

I made this jacket when I first started quilting in 2002 but didn't add the pockets to it. Every time I would wear it I would need a pocket to put my camera in and every time I would pull it off I would tell myself I was going to add pockets. Well, a many years later it has pockets and I have had fun making them. Those little things took me some time to complete but they will be worth it. That is one project to mark off the list of To Do Things. I had them made the other day when I went to a Dr. appointment. I took them with me and turned them in the waiting room. This jacket is reversible and I still want to add a ribbon or something over the side and arm seams to cover that. Maybe by the time it is worn out I will have it the way I want it. Now, I thought I marked this of the To Do List. LOL!

This is another project I started when I first started quilting. I made the straight squares at that time. Just a few months ago, our quilt guild made a 4 stack posie quilt, simular to stack and whack. I made the daisy blocks with the guild. Then putting them all together it made this ugly quilt. It is a little to dark. I also put polyester batting in it. Some of the quilts I been quilting for other people turned out so pretty with polyester batting that I thought I could use it in this quilt. I have my regrets now. I hope I never use another piece of that in one of my quilts. I like cotton only. I washed it and it did get softer but still wish I would have put cotton in it. I finished quilting this Thursday night before going to have Heart Cath on Friday. I wanted to have the binding on it so I could work on it while in the hospital. It sure passed the time since I had to stay over night. It also kept me warm. The air conditioning was a little to cold.

It's been a while since I have been quilting. I didn't do these two quilts in one day. I have been working on the nine patch for a couple of weeks. I would do one row a day or maybe more. I did the red one for Barbara in a couple of days.

Pockets

A few years ago I quilted a jacket but didn't put pockets on it. I like a pocket so I can carry my camera with me. Last night I was going thru some of my embroidery designs. I love watching my embroidrey machine sew the designs, it is so relaxing. It amazes me how these machines can sew these designs so pretty. After I got the design on I stippled around it with my Jem Platnium. I just love that little machine. This is the second time I have stippled on it. When I did the wall hanging I found out it was good for small projects. I found a cameo design that I sewed on two pieces of fabric to make pockets. Now I just have to sew the backing on them and turn them to make some useful pockets on my jacket. I will post a picture after they are sewn on.

I also got another quilt to quilt. Gretta brought one for Barb. I got it on the frame and almost got the first row quilted. I dread the first row most of all, although it goes fairly fast. I guess I consider it the most important. If you get it going straight you are in buisness.

Update on Flooding

Just giving update on the flooding. Our river has been rising since last night, big difference today. I think it is still rising. It has surrounded our barn and the pond is a lot larger that last night when I took the picture.

Flooding

This picture is of the pond across the road from our house. You can see how muddy it is and the river has backed it up. The river continues to rise tonight, but our house is on a hill and it has never gotten in it. This morning our church at Pikeville got flooded. The basement filled up and also our Pastor's house basement flooded also. The waters came in so fast, within hour and half, that even got in the garage, flooded both cars and truck.

I quilted the small wallhanging I have been working on. I am well pleased with it. I quilted it on my small Janome Jem Platinum and I love the way that little machine stipples. It is so quiet.

4 Things going at one Time

I haven't been keeping up with blogging but haven't been doing much either. The last couple of days I put a quilt in the frame and been doing a row a day on it. I hope I got till Christmas to get it done. LOL It has been so much rain and so dreary I just haven't been in the mood for quilting. This quilt is for couple and the husband made it all by himself. I hope to get in more of a mood to finish it.

This quilt is one I started some time back. I had a piece of material that I really liked but it has polyester in it. Well I had some embroidery designs that I wanted to practice with. I ended up making the blocks for this quilt. I guess it will last as long as it will last. I cut the sashing and cornerstones yesterday and got it together today.

This is a applique wall hanging that I started last year at camp, which I talked about in last post. I found out with this class that I don't have that much interest in applique. I ended up sewing the flower pedals on non-woven interfacing and turning them. I did the stem and the leaves as the teacher said and also the flower middle. I just don't like working with mylar and starching and ironing those edges down. I put the binding on it today. I still have some quilting left to do to it. I Know most people do that before the binding but especially on small things I do it backwards.

Been making a Braided border for another quilt for a month now. I just like trying different things. Martha and I had talked about doing this for awhile and I got started on it and hope to eventually get these long enough to go around a top I have put together.

Camp Caleb 2008 UFO

I finally finished this wall hanging from the Camp Caleb 2008 class. I took this applique class which is for intermediate. I am just not that advanced with applique. I am not good at the Mylar technique which this was suppose to be done with. I ended up using the non woven interfacing and turning the pedals. I needle turned the leaves but sewed the veins by machine. Now it is ready for quilting. This is one of my UFOs partially finished.

The Big One is Quilted!

I do believe this is the largest quilt I have done! I did two others that were a little longer but not quite as wide. This one is 98' wide and 108' long. I started on it Sunday and finished it today. I am pleased with how it turned out.

I have had instructions on making a Braid Border for some time and just got around to starting one yesterday. They are fun to do but I think my colors needed to be different. I will take picture and post it soon. Charging batteries right at the moment.

Ann's Quilt

I quilted this Thursday but just now posting it. I don't know the name of it. This was a fun quilt to do. I have one on the frame now for Ann that measures 98 x 107", which is taking me some time to do. I only do a row or two at a time.

Last week someone ask me how many quilts I had of my own that needed quilting. I have been making a page of them if you'd like to check it out. Some of the tops are finished and some are not. It won't take long to finish most of them.

Yellow Brick Road

Quilted a "Yellow Brick Road" for Sue and put the binding on it.

Quilted a wall hanging for myself that I made at camp in September. I finished the flowers at camp, brought it home and sandwiched it together and sewed around the border and put the binding on it. I am just now quilting it. I enjoyed making this 3D wallhanging. It was suppose to have small black beads for the center but they ran out and some of us did the French Knots. That was a lot of French Knots to do and I am not good at doing them.

I found a pattern for a Christmas Wreath online and now wanting to make one. I already have so many started but I guess I am not satisfied if I don't have numerous ones in the making.

Cultural Arts Day

Yesterday was Cultural Arts Day at the Extension office. I took three things and two got blue ribbons. I took the "Teacher's Pet" quilt, which is on the left with the blue ribbon, in the first picture. Veronica took the one beside mine. I really think hers should have won cause she had way more work in hers. The next picture has the Holiday items in it. Mine was the patchwork pumpkin. Veronica took the bunnies. Donna took the 4th of July wreath. Alma took the little pink beaded angel and I am not sure who took the goblet with the painted roses. The third picture has the quilted wallhangings. The first one was made by Joanne and the second one is mine. Joanne did such good job on hers. That was a project we did with the quilt guild. I didn't finish mine cause I am not that creative. Joanne choose the prettiest background material and she is good at making the flowers, which is made from yo yo's. We had a good day. Lots of the Homemakers were there. We all brought a covered dish and had lunch and enjoyed talking with everyone. We also presented the Dog Shelter with the quilts we made for the "Snuggles Project".

Roman Stripe

The Roman Stripe is quilted and binding on it. I put Bamboo cotton in it. It is really soft batting but made it fairly heavier than I normally like. I had gotten it half price and wanted to see how it worked. It seems a little softer after washing. I can't wait to put my quilts in the washer when the last stitch goes in the binding. I love the crinkle look after washing and it also makes the quilt drape better.

Another Patchwork Jungle

One of the UFO's I mentioned yesterday, another Patchwork Jungle, now has the border on it and it is ready to be quilted. I have the binding cut for it and a pillow case already made. I have already made 2 more of this same pattern. Got a picture the other day from one of the girls I made one for.

Just finished quilting the Roman Stripe I had made a couple of years ago and hadn't finished. I had even cut the binding. At that time I was using 2 1/2" binding, now I like using 2 1/4". I ended up pressing the seam out and cutting it 2 1/4". I know that is a small difference but I think it looks so much better because there isn't any space around the edge that isn't up against the 1/4" seam where you sew it on the quilt. Good thing I had a small piece of the fabric left because I hadn't cut enough. That is why I can't use a lot of my stash, because I am afraid I will need some for UFO's.

I finially got the Title problem solved. Somehow my Transliteration Feature was Enabled. To Disable: Go to the Settings|Basic tab and enable the transliteration option. Select your language. Click the Transliteration button on the posting form to type in transliteration mode. The language was Hindi.

No quilts to show but I am working on one of my own. It is a large one. I got it in the frame yesterday and half quilted today. Just been working on it a row or two at a time. In between times cleaning basement and doing some rearranging to make things more assessable. I did make a design wall by putting a sheet on a pipe and hanging it from the ceiling. Don't know if I am going to like that or not. Pinned the Victory Quilt blocks I have finished on it. Now I see how many I need to make. I was going so good with them during the snowy weather but got back to quilting and put them aside. I also got a quilt for my cousins little girl about finished, all but the last border. Got one for my cousin about finished, except the last border. Just why don't I finish some of these things before jumping to something else. Maybe when I get everything organized I will complete all these in a day. Yesterday evening I made a label for the quilt I am quilting. It's been a while since I usued my embroidery machine. I just love watching it work. Got some Bamboo Batting a couple of months ago and trying it. I think it is going to make the quilt a little heavier than I like. I hope to have it quilted and binding on it for Cultural Arts Day which is Thursday. I am also going to start putting sleeves on my quilts. I found out during our Quilter's Day Out that they come in handy when you want to hang them.

Notice the title. The first word is in another language. When I space between the words in the title it does this. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have checked every where I know to set the language but all places show it set for English. If you notice the last blogs I just didn't space in between the words.

Yesterday I finished the "Ohio Star" for Greta. This was a fun quilt to quilt. I didn't have any thread breakages. Believe it or not I have not had any problems with thread breakage or gobbing bottom threads in a long time. It is such a joy when the machine works good.

It has been a while since my last blog. I haven't been feeling well but much better now. I took a Twilling Embroidery class and here is the results. I enjoyed learning this. It is a double knot. I also learned Sashiko Embroidery but haven't finished that one yet, but getting close. It is just a running stitch that is done simular to quilting. I have also quilted 2 quilts but waiting till I get the binding on them before posting them.

The Lawrence County Quilted Treasures Quilt Guild had our quilt show Saturday. We had lots of visitors from other counties. Monica, my daughter, which is a LMT, was our guest speaker. Her presentation was "Fabric of the Body". She told how massage was simular to fabric. For example: When you tear out stitches and it leaves holes in the fabric and then you can smooth it out with your fingers and sometimes the holes will go back together or by washing the material it will heal itself. That is simular to what massage does for our bodies. It aligns everything back up again. For instance, when we are sitting sewing we sit for long periods of time and most of the time with our shoulders together and maybe even slumped over. We should not sit for long periods of time. We should get up and walk and straighten our bodies. She recommends massages starting about once a month or even weekly if you see the results. I will testify that they work wonders.

Victory Quilt (Victory Block)

None perfect no not one. Here's the Victory Block. Wow! was I sweatin this one. Don't look like it would be so hard since it doesn't have to many pieces but I it is harder to match up than you think. Only ripped out a small portion in the center. The background is mostly bias pieces and I didn't want it to strech by ripping out. I will live with the unmatched V. Also in the very center they are a lot of thickness but it is laying flat. Eleanor said not to use steam on this block but I couldn't help myself and used just one time after it was laying flat.

This is a first quilt for Phyllis's daughter. She did a very good job for a first quilt. Her seams were consistant, pressing was very good and also points matching. I just love the colors in this quilt. It amazes me for a first quilt to be so big.

#100 - Stars and Hearts

Just finished the binding on Kay's Stars & Hearts flannel quilt. This was number 100 quilt that I have quilted on my Pinnacle Frame with the Janome 1600P machine. I had the Flannel one quilted on Monday but just now finishing the hand sewn binding. I have been sewing the binding on the machine but I cut the binding 2 1/4" and thought I messed up and it wouldn't be wide enough once it was folded but it would have been alright. Looks like Kay gets a special deal on this one since it was my fault. It looks much better by hand and I have enjoyed sitting and sewing.

Gretta's Christmas Wall Hanging is finally finished. Just finished hand binding and adding a sleeve to it. I have had this since November. The backing was about 2 inches to small and she had to get another backing, also my machine was in the shop. I just love the look of a binding done by hand.

Finished another Teacher's Pet for Martha. She made this one for her brother for a wedding gift. This was a large one. It measured 78" x 93". I quilted it from top to bottom whereas I usually like to put them on the frame sideways to keep from having to roll as many times and also to keep the bulk in the throat from being so big. I always like to attach the backing on the frame with the selvage ends. I feel I can get them on the frame straighter.

Finally figured out how to do this block. It looks like the simplest block but if you don't have the 9 1/2" square up ruler that Eleanor uses you got some figureing out to do. I sewed the blocks last night but didn't figure how to sew them together till today. I have about every ruler imaginable but of course never the one I need. Eleanors techniques are good if you have the tools to work with. For some reason my blocks are turning out to be 12" instead of 12 1/2".

Since Tuesday evening at 8 till Thursday evening at 8 we were without electricity. The ice storm weighed down the trees and they fell on electric lines and broke them. During this time I have been cutting the blocks for Eleanor Burns Victory Quilt. You can find videos of each block here. I have been watching the videos and made the first block yesterday. We didn't loose our phone service and we had a generator that made it possible for me to have internet service. This is going to be a fun quilt. The videos make it so much easier than following directions in the book. I sure didn't do a good job adding the Rocket tips and I don't like the fabric selection.

Civil War Quilt

I think I am getting way behind on blogging. With all the cold weather, time just flies when you got lots of quilty things to work on. As you can see the pond froze over. This pond is across the road from my house.

Finished a Civil War quilt for Sue on Wednesday. It was a large quilt but went so smooth, no problems with machine. I love the colors in it. Makes me want to do learn paper-piecing and make a Civil War quilt. Guess I will have to start colecting fabric as I have with Eleanor Burns Victory Quilt. I have collected for about two or three years for it. I think I am just about to start it.

Very Productive Day

The last two days have been very productive. It is been so cold I won't get out and that gave me time to sew, sew, sew. I just love it! Just finished another Patchwork Jungle Quilt. This is very simular to the Teacher's Pet that Phyllis, Martha and I made. The only difference is no set-in's and not set on a point. This makes it even faster to put together to the Teacher's Pet. I think Martha and Phyllis can make one in their sleep. They have made so many I can't count them. I am still going to make another one for my cousin's little girl. This one is for Marybeth's friends little girl. I even got the binding cut and pressed for both quilts. I have also been doing some machine embroidery. Thursday and Friday I made 20basket blocks from Aunt Bea's Parlor, Black Creations CD. It was so much fun to watch these sew out. It took from 10 to 20 minutes each. I hadn't used my embroidery machine in a while and just enjoyed it greatly.

Another Teacher's Pet for Phyllis is completed. I think Martha created a monster with these Teacher's Pet pattern. They are so easy and fast to do and also look really nice. Only hard part about them is the set-ins. Sometimes they can give problems because they are cut on a bias. You have to make sure you mark them as you cut them to indicate what side is bias.

Also cut bias binding for 4 baby quilts for Debbie. These are quilted panels and I made the binding and sewed it on by machine. These will be washed to much for hand sewn binding.

Layla's Birthday Quilt

I quilted Martha's wall hanging she did at camp. I told her I wasn't good at small stippling and you can see in the picture. She sure is a friend to trust me to learn on her masterpiece. This was the Simple appliqué method that Sue Huseman taught at Camp Caleb last year. Mine is just so simple it is still in the bag. I did finish the one that Gypsy taught. I am going to stipple it next. I will post pictures later. I have Martha's on the frame now. I liked it better than the simple appliqué. I have been working on Layla's (granddaughter) quilt this morning. I got the blocks sewn together. Now got to put the borders on and quilt it.

Embroidered Rose

Finally finished this one. I have had it for a month now. Had problems with machine, had flu, and the holidays kept me from finishing this one sooner. I didn't have but one thread break throughout this quilt. The lady hand embroidered these roses. She did very good job.

Blue Jean Purse

One of the girls at Homemaker Annual Party the other night had a blue jean purse. Last night Lionel picked up the grandkids to stay all night with us and I ask him to tell Granddaughter Emily to bring an old pair of her jeans if she wanted to make a purse. She brought a pair of her brothers. This purse takes around an hour to make. You can change the ribbons as you like. She really likes it.

Yesterday, Lionel was off work and we cleaned the storage building out. I was so glad to get that done. Now we can start filling it again. I have already started putting some things from the bedroom in the basement in the building. I am hoping to get more organized. Hopefully get my sewing machines and things in one room. Today I finally got back to quilting. Quilted Martha's Jelly Roll quilt. My machine is working good. Don't remember one thread breakage today.

I am not one to plan to far ahead. I just go with the flow. But today I hope to get some quilting done. Yesterday I ran some errands for Lionel.

I have been working on some letters this morning to make a wall hanging. I am going to try to learn a little about spacing letters with my embroidery machine. As you saw in my last post, I didn't do to well. This time I am printing out a template of each letter and placing it on the material and going to mark each letter to where it should go. Now getting it placed in the hoop is another story. We will just have to see when it is sewn out.

It's been a WEEK

I can't believe it has been a week since last blog. My! how time passes! I guess the Holiday slowed me down. I had more problems with my machine. Went today and got another one. I hope to get caught up now. Haven't done much sewing. Yesterday I put another border on a quilt and tried some embroidery. I am just not good at spacing my letters. I guess I need practice, practice, practice. Now how could I get off that much in spacing? Leave it to me, I can do it.

Quilt Guild

Today was Quilt Guild party time. I wasn't going this morning because of the cold weather Yesterday I started having a sinus headache and didn't want it to get worse. But Alma called and encouraged me to go and I talked to Marie and she encouraged me. So I braved the cold weather. I hadn't gotten a turkey for Christmas dinner yet. I got all that taken care of. We made a Yo Yo Santa which you can see hanging on my gift from Gloria which is the spool holder. My Santa has one leg longer than the other. He looks like he is stepping high. A friend at church had given me the thread and I didn't have anywhere to put it, so this came in really handy. Also, we exchanged pin cushions, which you can see the one I got hanging on the left side of the spools made by Marie. Marie got the one that I had taken. I had cheated and bought mine at the Sewing Center. You can also see two pillow cases hand made for me from Stephanie. She does a Great Job with hand stitching.

Friday's Accomplishments

On Friday, I got up and started quilting Martha's quilt. Monica called to see if I was going to the Annual Homemaker Party at 5:30pm. I had forgotten all about that party. I was so glad she called early cause I had a lot to get done. She had just gotten off work for Ambulance Service and had about 45 minute drive to come home. She stopped to get ingredients for making fudge on her way home. By the time she got here I had wrapped gifts for family get together on Saturday and washed clothes. I had also made a peach cobbler and the cranberry salad to take to Homemaker party. I had the kettle and measuring cups, etc. set out for her to get started. She made 4 batches of fudge before we went to the party. I just couldn't get over how well things went. I went to pick up some more chocolate chips while she made a batch so she could make some for us. It sure has come in handy. I had something to take to Homemaker party, Family gathering and Quilt Guild today. Each year this is what she does for gift giving. I enjoyed the day with her.

On Wednesday after I had finished Stephanie's Team Quilt I saw this wall hanging laying on the shelf beside the quilt frame and decided to quilt one of my own. I finished the binding and putting the sleeve on Thursday. Very disappointed in the way the binding turned out. It is cut on the bias and went on straight but looks curly after it is hung. I don't know if it would look better if it was washed or not. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I would like to know what I did wrong.

I am back to quilting again. Haven't gotten my machine back but Dealer loaned me one. Got the Embroidered Baby Quilt done tonight after Homemaker Christmas Party. I got it quilted this afternoon and sewed the binding on it tonight. I had the binding cut and pressed. This one is for Judy Walker. She wanted it stippled close. It amazes me how these quilts look when they are in the frame and after they are taken off. They just seem to come to life. I used light yellow thread on this and was so worried it didn't look right on the back but it blends in better than any other colors I could have used.

Another Top

I have been working on a top that I started in the summer. I had quilted one like this for Joanne and liked it so well I thought I would do one for myself. I had a couple of rows completed. Well it was going good till I got to quilting and sort of layed it aside. I finished this yesterday. Now my problem is getting enough for the border to complete it. I am doing this from the fabric I got at a yard sale this summer. They are no way buying the blue for the border as that is what I would like for it. I will come up with something.

I haven't been quilting because my machine is still in the shop. I have had this machine in the shop so many times. Got it in January of this year and the hook race is all the time getting a burr on it. It has been polished a number of times and completely replaced once and now again. I do not recommend the Janome 1600P if they are all like mine. It cost enough till you would think it would last 25 years. I have other Janome's that have gave me good service but this one is a lemon.
